Photojournalist Erick Morales shares his photographs from the National Strike in Colombia, when Colombians from all walks of life protested the injustices set by the Colombian government and politicians. Erick talks about his experience documenting the strike, how the media negatively portrayed the protestors, and the importance of giving voice to the unheard.

El fotoperiodista Erick Morales comparte sus fotografías del Paro Nacional en Colombia, cuando colombianos de todos los ámbitos de la vida protestaron por las injusticias establecidas por el gobierno y los políticos colombianos. Erick habla sobre su experiencia al documentar la huelga, cómo los medios retrataron negativamente a los manifestantes y la importancia de dar voz a los que no se escuchan.
What was the National Strike in Colombia about?
El Paro Nacional en Colombia fue convocado por diferentes organizaciones, estudiantes universitarios, profesores, indígenas, trabajadores estatales, el sector campesino y agrario, el llamado “Comité Nacional del Paro”. Durante cuatro meses se organizaron una serie de protestas de manera no consecutiva en varias ciudades del país, el motivo de las protestas es el descontento de algunos ciudadanos frente a las políticas económicas, sociales y ambientales del gobierno del presidente Ivan Duque, así como el homicidio de líderes sociales, la masacre de niños y jóvenes en todo el territorio colombiano, presupuesto de la educación reducido para pagar deudas y millonarios contratos, corrupción dentro del gobierno, criminalización de las protestas sociales y la implementación de un acuerdo de paz que el mismo gobierno no apoya.
Las fotos son en la ciudad de Bogotá durante el periodo de Noviembre 2019 y Marzo del 2020.

The National Strike in Colombia was convened by different organizations, university students, teachers, indigenous people, state workers, the peasant and agrarian sector, and the so-called “National Strike Committee”. For four months, a series of non-consecutive protests were organized in several cities of the country, the reason for the protests is the dissatisfaction of some citizens with the economic, social and environmental policies of the government of President Ivan Duque, as well as the homicide of social leaders, the massacre of children and young people throughout the Colombian territory, reduced education budget to pay debts and millionaire contracts, corruption within the government, criminalization of social protests and the implementation of a peace agreement as the same government Does not support.
The photos are in the city of Bogotá during the period of November 2019 and March 2020.
Why did you feel the need to document the protest?
Sentí que desde lo que se hacer podía contribuir en algo, muchos medios locales lo que hacen es desinformar y por ese motivo la protesta social se criminaliza, ya no nos muestran como protestantes, sino como vándalos. Por otro lado, vengo de una familia que viene del campo, todos hemos luchado por estar en donde estamos y el gobierno nos quiere quitar lo poco que tenemos, hasta la vida misma.

I felt that I could contribute something. Many local media outlets misinform and for that reason social protest is criminalized; they no longer show us as protestors, but as vandals. On the other hand, I come from a family that comes from the countryside, we have all struggled to be where we are and the government wants to take away what little we have, even life itself.
What sort of feelings did you experience while photographing?
No te voy a mentir, en principio si tenia mucho miedo, trabaje en medios y nunca me enviaron a cubrir una protesta, era la primera vez para mi. Ese miedo quizá era producto del abuso de poder por parte de La Policía y el ESMAD hacia los marchantes, pensaba en que no quería estar cubierto de mi sangre, ni de la de nadie más. Después del primer día de marchas y de ver el material que tenía, solo pensaba en que quería volver a salir. El miedo ya no era miedo, era adrenalina.

I'm not going to lie to you, in principle I was very scared. I work in the media and they never sent me to cover a protest before and this was the first time for me. That fear was that I would the product of abuse of power by the Police and the ESMAD towards the protesters. I did not want to be covered in my blood, or anyone else's. After the first day of marches and seeing the material that I had, I only thought that I wanted to go out again. The fear was no longer fear, it was adrenaline.
What are some differences in photographing protests versus photographing your usual subjects?
En las protestas todo se agudiza, tienes que estar pendiente de la toma, de los hechos, de que no te roben el equipo, de los gases y de que La Policía no te esté apuntando con algún arma. Cuando hago fotografía documental o retratos todo cambia, estas mas tranquilo, puedes hablar más con la gente, redireccionar, estás atento a otras realidades, todo se ve de una manera más amable.

In the protests, everything gets worse, you have to be aware of what you are shooting, of the facts, that your equipment is not stolen, of the gases, and that the Police are not pointing a weapon at you. When I do documentary photography or portraits everything changes; you are calmer, you can talk more with people, redirect them, you are attentive to other realities, everything is seen in a more friendly way.
What is story behind your favorite photograph from the strike?
Era el tercer día de protestas y durante los dos días anteriores todo había sido un caos, la fuerza pública usaba su poder para sacar a la gente de las calles (nada nuevo)
Se convocó a una marcha pacífica que llegó a La Plaza de Bolívar, los manifestantes como acto de libertad empezaron a correr en círculos ondeando la bandera de Colombia y de los pueblos indígenas, minutos después el ESMAD empezó a desalojar la plaza disparando gases lacrimógenos y bombas aturdidoras, al parecer estos actos van en contra de las doctrinas implementadas por el gobierno de turno, ese mismo gobierno que dice apoyar la protesta pero que no la respeta. Una vez se disipó el humo de los gases un hombre se arrodillo frente a decenas de Policías gritando “No más, por favor” los policías solo miraban, todos tuvimos que irnos del lugar, hubo varios detenidos y heridos ese día.

It was the third day of protests and during the previous two days everything had been chaos and the public force used their power to get people off the streets (nothing new).
A peaceful march was called that reached the Plaza de Bolívar. The protesters, as an act of freedom, began to run in circles waving the flag of Colombia and the indigenous peoples. Minutes later the ESMAD began to evacuate the square firing tear gas and bombs. Apparently, these acts go against the doctrines implemented by the government in power, the same government that claims to support the protest but does not respect it. Once the smoke from the gases dissipated, a man knelt in front of dozens of policemen shouting "No more, please" the policemen just looked, we all had to leave the place, there were several arrested and injured that day.
Has this experience inspired you to shoot differently?
Más que disparar de otra manera, lo que me dejó esta experiencia fueron ganas de seguir saliendo a cubrir estos hechos. Necesitamos más gente en las calles para que la voz sea más fuerte y más ojos para mostrar la realidad que los medios nos ocultan.

More than shooting in another way, what this experience left me was the desire to continue going out to cover these events. We need more people in the streets so that the voice is stronger and more eyes to show the reality that the media hide from us.
What's next for you as an artist?
La pandemia cambió los planes de todo el mundo. En este momento me dedico más a trabajar en proyectos personales, cosas que había dejado quietas, ideas que quedaron inconclusas. Trabajo en una serie donde quiero representar la ausencia de la vida en la calle y lo que puedo vivir y replicar desde mi espacio.
Espero también poder seguir usando mi trabajo para darle visibilidad a las problemáticas de mi país, todos los actos hasta el más mínimo suman esfuerzos en esta lucha.

The pandemic changed everyone's plans. At this moment I dedicate myself more to working on personal projects, things that I had left alone, ideas that were left unfinished. I work on a series where I want to represent the absence of life on the street and what I can experience and replicate from my space.
I also hope to be able to continue using my work to give visibility to the problems of my country, all the acts down to the smallest amount add up to efforts in this fight.
